Types of burial funerals
At AFD, we want you to feel confident in your choices – no matter how unique. That's why we offer several types of funeral and burial services.
Please note that some of these options may incur additional charges.
Do you want a traditional funeral service that follows your faith? We'll guide you through the process, step by step – from choosing a venue to arranging transport.
A burial funeral doesn't have to be religious. As well as guiding funeral arrangements, we can advise you on venues and put you in touch with non-religious celebrants.
Direct burial
Direct burial might be right for you if you're trying to save money on the funeral or don't want a lot of fuss. With this option, the person who died is buried without a funeral service.
Optional extras
Do you need help planning something special? Our optional extras let you personalise the funeral in all sorts of ways, from arranging extra transport to sourcing beautiful floral tributes.

All cultures. All needs.
At AFD, respect is our watchword. No matter your religion, cultural background or circumstances, you can always expect to be treated with dignity and kindness.
That's why we don't work to any one faith or creed. Whether you're planning a traditional funeral and burial or a unique celebration of life, we'll respect your choices and make sure your religious needs are met.

It's this multi-faith approach that sets us apart. And it's why families throughout our community trust us to arrange the send-off their loved ones deserve.

What is a burial ceremony?
A burial ceremony is another name for a burial funeral service. This type of ceremony can happen at the graveside, in a cemetery chapel or at a religious venue like a church or mosque.
How can I buy a burial plot?
To buy a burial plot, you must purchase a certificate called 'exclusive rights of burial'. This gives you the right to use that plot for a set time (usually between 25 and 100 years).
If it's a municipal cemetery, you can buy the certificate from the local council. For private burial grounds, you'll need to purchase it from the company that runs the burial ground.
It's important to note that exclusive rights of burial are not included in funeral director fees.
Are burial plots permanent?
Burial plots are permanent, but exclusive rights of burial are not.
What this means is that when the rights of burial run out, another person can be buried in the same grave. However, cemeteries won't remove coffins from graves to make room for more burials.
Can a burial take place without a death certificate?
Yes. Your funeral director can arrange a burial without seeing the death certificate. However, you'll need to register the death and get a document known as 'the green form'. Give this form to your funeral director and they can start making funeral arrangements.
